The Boysenberry was developed in the mid 1920’s by Rudolph Boysen on his farm in Anaheim, California. It was another berry farmer in the area, however, who popularized the fruit – one Walter Knott from Buena Park, CA. It was Mr. Knott who named the berries after their original grower and began selling the fruit as well as jams, jellies, and pies made by his wife Cordelia. The Boysenberry products were a massive hit, eventually leading to the opening of the now famous Knott’s Berry Farm Amusement Park.

Much like their Blackberry relatives, Boysenberries are a floricane fruiting bramble. The canes are long, thorny, and fast-growing. They require a trellis to grow on and annual pruning. They will spread easily from root suckers and from tip-rooting.
