The American Persimmon, Diospyros virginiana, the wild native persimmons are one of the very best trees for attracting deer and wildlife. Deer hunters and wildlife lovers use them to attract them. Deer actively seek out persimmon trees, and eat every fruit that is within reach or when it hits the ground. Our American Persimmon tree will bear fruit in about six years. The fruit has rich, nutty, amaretto flavor, but is astringent until completely ripe. (The old timers always said to "wait until the first frost before eating a persimmon". The persimmon tree bark is dark and very rough and the fall foliage color is red to orange - red. The native trees grow in a wide variety of conditions and are quite adaptable. Trees are either male or female so plan on planting at least three to better insure pollination.
