'Sumner' was discovered in Tifton, GA in ca. 1932 by Walter Sumner. Sumner's characteristics as well as DNA evidence suggest that 'Schley' may be a potential parent.

Sumner is well known for its disease resistance, but can be somewhat slow to come into bearing. Although, this cultivar would benefit form crop thinning every few years due to overloads that can happen. It has a high quality yield and is visually appealing with upright growth and semi-open canopy.
